What is education?

The term education comes from the word e-ducere, which means to lead out. This means that education is a relentless process of becoming worth. Different scholars have debated the meaning of education and drawn varied conclusions; however, commonalities are noted among the definitions provided. Education is the process through which a society transmits its values, skills, and knowledge from one generation to another. As such, it forms the fundamental basis for development for any society as it plays a central role in participating and understanding complex ideas. As such, education is essential as it equips individuals with skills to earn a livelihood and creates awareness and sensitivity to become responsible citizens.

Types of education

Different ways have been established on how to categorize education, for instance, by subject or age. Some of the common types of education include:

Formal education is usually in school where learners learn literacy skills. Formal education begins in elementary school to high schools and finally to higher education where individuals are awarded undergraduate degrees.

Non-formal education is inclusive of adult basic education. Here, adults learn literacy skills and necessary job skills. Computer-assisted instruction, home education, and individualized education are the possibilities of non-formal education.

Informal education, on the other hand, is not well organized. A parent instructing a child on how to ride a bicycle or cook a meal is an example of informal education. Besides, individuals get informal education by reading books and educational websites, and this is known as self-education.

Levels of education

Education levels, in other words, are formal education subdivisions. It starts from early childhood education, primary, secondary and tertiary education. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and cultural organization (UNESCO) identifies seven levels of education. Early childhood education is done at the preschool level, kindergarten and nursery school. Primary education is done at middle school; secondary education is done at high school and higher education done in colleges, universities and vocational training centers.
